Cold Weather Drives Bugs In Your Home

I’ve been in my office a lot this week and I’ve talked with so many homeowners that are experiencing the same problem….ants, ants and more ants.  Some homeowners are reporting ants by the hundreds coming inside their home through cracks around windows and doors…and they want to know why.

Well…it’s pretty darn cold out, even for Florida, and their looking for warmth…just like you and me, but they don’t have jackets, boots and sweaters to keep them warm.  Your nice comfy home is very inviting to all kinds of critters this time of year…including ants, roaches & rats.

So, what can you do to help prevent these critters from entering your home??

Subterranean Termite Bait Stations vs. Liquid Termidor Treatment

Warning: If you currently have a termite bait system installed around your home or if you’re thinking about having 1 installed….WATCH THIS VIDEO NOW!!

5 Year Money Back Guarantee on Subterranean Termite Treatment using Termidor®.  If after 120 days and up to 5 years (1825 days) of your initial treatment, we uncover a live colony of Subterranean Termites, I will retreat your entire home for FREE and refund your entire initial investment. *

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about installing Subterranean Termite bait stations over the years so I figured today is as good a day as any to let you know WHY I DO NOT EVER recommend bait stations for Subterranean Termites.

First, let me preface my comments by saying I used to service and sell termite bait systems when they were introduced way back in 1995, so I know what I’m talking about.

Here are the main reasons I no longer use a termite bait system:

  • Termite bait systems are installed 10-15′ apart leaving huge gaps in termite coverage.
  • When the termite bait system is installed, there is ZERO bait placed in the stations.  There are sticks of wood placed in each station hoping termites find the stations and not your home 1st. This is much like chumming for fish.
  • Bait does not get placed in the stations until LIVE activity is found in 1 of the stations.  What happens if the termites miss the stations and head right for the house?
  • Maintenance of the system is costly and companies don’t check them properly.  Most stations I find look like they’ve been abandoned and haven’t been checked in months, sometimes years.  Watch the video above for proof…
  • There is nothing around the foundation protecting your home if termites miss the stations and find your home.
  • No money back offer on system.  See our Money Back Guarantee above.
  • Older technology and very labor intensive.
  • Much higher failure rate than a liquid treatment.

These are just a few of the reasons I converted all of our clients that had a termite bait system to a liquid treatment in 2007.  I removed all the stations and did a full liquid treatment FREE of charge.

When I started my company in 1980, I was using a product called Chlordane to treat Subterranaean Termites.  Chlordane was awesome.  It killed termites…and just about any other insect in sight…nearly 1o0% of the time.  The product was great at killing bugs and treatment methods didn’t really matter.  The product just had to be placed in the vicinity of termite activity and BOOM, the termites were dead.  Sound great, right?  Well, just as the product was great at killing bugs, it wasn’t great for the environment nor for people handling and applying it.   The product was proven to cause cancer and many other health related issues, so it was removed from the market in 1988.

From 1988 to 1995, we were left to treat Subterranean Termites using inferior liquid products.  Retreatment or failure rates went from less than 1% to nearly 30%.  What that means is out of every 100 homes we treated for Subterranean Termites, nearly 30% resulted in a re-infestation of termites.  Nearly 30% of all the termite treatments failed.  That’s a huge amount of failure for any business…and some businesses had to close their doors.  Fortunately for me, that didn’t happen.

So, when termite bait technology was introduced in 1995, there was a big need for a change in the termite industry and I was willing to give it a shot.  Why not?  I’d gone from 1% failure to 30% failure.  What was there to lose?  I went through the training, got my staff trained on how to install and maintain the program and we started selling the baiting system.  We sold ALOT of bait systems…a lot.

After a few year of maintaining the bait system, we started having failures, just as we had with the liquid treatments.  The termites weren’t finding the stations, they were finding the houses instead.  We were visiting properties monthly, had plenty of bait in the stations and we were still finding termites in the houses.  We were spending a lot of time and money monitoring termite activity we couldn’t stop with the baits.

Fortunately, in 2000, we were introduced to a new product called Termidor®.  It had new technology and a lot of test data showing the effectiveness of the product on Subterranean Termites.  We were skeptical at 1st, but willing to give it a try.  I’m happy to say, we’re still using Termidor to this day.  Our retreatment or failure rates are back under 1% and our customers are thrilled with our 100% money back guarantee.

In fact, we’re now offering a 5 year money back guarantee on all Termidor® treatments.  If after 120 days and up to 5 years (1825 days) of your initial treatment, we uncover a live colony of Subterranean Termites, I will retreat your entire home for FREE and refund your entire initial investment. *

Formosan Termites Destroy This Tampa Home in Temple Terrace

In this video, you’ll find Chet at a home in Temple Terrace, Florida, near the Busch Gardens area.

The homeowner called for a free inspection because she suspected she has termites.  While Chet was doing his inspection, he found some wood that looked ok from the surface, but he spotted some dirt along the support beams near the roof line.  Once he spotted the dirt, he started to inspect the wood a little closer.  Upon closer inspection he found massive damage to the wooden supports from Formosan Subterranean Termites.  The termites literally ate the wood up…to the paint.

Once Chet found the termite damage, he showed the homeowner and she couldn’t believe her eyes.  The wood just crumbled to dust in Chet’s hands .  Not something a homeowner ever wants to see.

Here are some interesting facts regarding Formosan Subterranean Termites:

  • A single Formosan Subterranean Termite may contain several million termites versus only several hundred thousand termites for native subterranean termite species.
  • Because of its population size and foraging range, a Formosan Subterranean Termite colony poses serious threats to nearby structures.
  • Once a Formosan Subterranean Termite colony is established, it has never been eradicated from an area.  The colony spreads from home to home during their mating season.
  • Formosan Subterranean Termite colonies are current active in Temple Terrace, Bay Crest and surrounding areas.
  • A single Formosan Subterranean Termite colony may produce as many as 70,000 swarmers each season.  The swamers or reproductive cast sole responsibility is to swarm (fly) and pair up with a partner to start a new colony.  This is how the termites spread from area to area.
  • Formosan Subterranean Termites do not need direct ground access for a colony to survive.  They can form an aerial nest, or carton, if the reproductives find a suitable location above ground with the conditions needed for the colony to survive…food and water.

If you suspect you have a termite issue, if you’ve seen our trucks in your area, or if you just want peace of mind,  give our office a call @ 813-935-7554 to schedule your FREE inspection.  We’ll send one of our highly-trained termite inspectors to your home for a thorough inspection.

How Termites Enter & Destroy Home and What We Do to Protect Your Home

Subterranean Termite Inspection

In this video, Chet Rowland, owner of Chet’s Termite & Pest Management, take you under a Tampa Bay home to show you how Subterranean Termites enter homes, the damage they cause and how we treat your home to stop the destruction.

Subterranean Termites build mud tubes from the ground up.  They build these mud tubes like highways and super highways that are traveled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Termites never stop working.

Once a termite colony has gotten large enough, it will transform members of its existing colony or produce winged reproductive termites, called alates or swamers.

During certain times a year, environmental conditions trigger these winged termites to fly from their nest to mate and locate new nest sites and food sources.

Subterranean Termites ‘swarm’…or mate… mid January thru Mid March around the Tampa Bay area.  The swarms generally occurs during daytime hours when people are working, so when homeowners come home after work they find hundreds of small black bugs, some with wings…some without, around their doors and windows.  In most cases, this swarming phenomenon is usually the 1st indication to the homeowner that the home has a termite infestation.

We’re now quickly approaching that ‘swarm’ time of year, so if  you suspect you have a termite issue or if you just want to have your home inspected by the best termite technicians in the business, give our office a call @ 813-935-7554 to schedule your free inspection today.
